Plant Spacing

Plant spacing is based on the ultimate width of the plants. This figure is normally given as a range; for example, 3-5’. If you live in a cold climate and/or want plants to fill in more quickly, plan to space at the shorter end of the range. If you live in a warm climate, are on a limited budget, or are willing to wait longer for plants to touch, use the higher end of the range. Using the larger number is recommended when calculating distance from a building or structure. There’s really no such thing as "maximum spacing": if you don’t want your plants to touch, you can space them as far apart as you’d like. All plant spacing is calculated on center, or in other words, the centers of the plants are spaced one half of their eventual width apart:

Description Summerific ‘Evening Rose’ perennial hibiscus (aka rose mallow or Hibiscus moscheutos) from Proven Winners combines vivid rose-pink flowers with dramatic deep purple foliage to create one of the most stunning plants you have ever seen. The show begins in mid-summer and continues for weeks, creating a super-colorful display that will grab your attention and capture your heart. One plant on its own is fabulous; planting three or more for a hedge or large group will create a remarkable impact in any sunny spot. Summerific hibiscus from Proven Winners are herbaceous perennials, so unlike their close cousin rose of Sharon, they die back to the ground in fall and begin each year fresh in spring. They are one of the latest perennials to emerge in spring, but watching them transform from tiny buds to big, healthy plants in a matter of weeks is nothing short of delightful.   How To Grow Soil: Plant in any sunny spot. Can tolerate wet soil once established; if grown in dry conditions, growth and blooming may be compromised.

Fertilizing: Fertilize in early spring, once the ground has thawed, with a granular rose fertilizer.
Winterizing: No special treatment is required; Stems can be cut off once the plant has gone dormant in late autumn as they do not add any considerable interest. 2-3" of mulch is recommended.
Maintenance: Little needed. Perennial hibiscus is one of the very last plants to emerge each spring. Be patient! Once they begin to show buds, they will start to grow quickly.

So far, so good

The plants were packed very well and appeared healthy. They are acclimating to our East TN climate and look great, so far. Anxious to see the blooms, probably next year.

Jury’s out

The plant arrived smaller and weaker than expected for a $35 plant. It’s alive, but seems to be struggling. The real test will be winter. I’m a bit disappointed.

The important thing when it comes to purchasing plants, whether online or in a garden center, is that they have a full, robust root system, and that's what we prioritize in our greenhouses. The more roots a plant has, the more energy it can put into growing once it is planted in your garden. We do keep our plants trimmed to encourage strong root development!

Summerific evening rose is doing really great...they arrive in green color leave and now it's dark red leaves and has grown double. Can't wait for this plant to flourish.
