Plant Spacing

Plant spacing is based on the ultimate width of the plants. This figure is normally given as a range; for example, 3-5’. If you live in a cold climate and/or want plants to fill in more quickly, plan to space at the shorter end of the range. If you live in a warm climate, are on a limited budget, or are willing to wait longer for plants to touch, use the higher end of the range. Using the larger number is recommended when calculating distance from a building or structure. There’s really no such thing as "maximum spacing": if you don’t want your plants to touch, you can space them as far apart as you’d like. All plant spacing is calculated on center, or in other words, the centers of the plants are spaced one half of their eventual width apart:

Unless you are planting in a straight line, as you might for hedges or edging, space your plants in a staggered or zig-zag pattern for a more interesting and naturalistic look:

Description Plants aren't ordinarily cozy, but Wooly thyme (Thymus pseudolanuginosus) is simply the cuddliest ground cover we've come across. Its stems and leaves are covered in dense hair, which provides the soft to the touch feeling that both adults and children enjoy. This cute little ground cover is just 3 inches tall and spreads quickly to 12" wide, terrific for use between stepping stones, at shade garden edges, or in containers. Its light pink summer borne flowers attract bees, but not much notice from humans as they are quite tiny. Woolly thyme isn't nearly as needy as some of the ground covers you've come across, as it resents wet soils and doesn't need a bit of fertilizing.  How To Grow Soil: Grows easily in average soils, but prefers sandy or rocky soils with good drainage. Will tolerate and perform well in poor soils.

Water: Prefers dry conditions and will not tolerate overly moist or soggy conditions. Likely to develop root rot if overwatered in soil that has poor drainage.
Spacing:  6-12" apart
Fertilizing: Does not require fertilizer.
Winterizing: If planted in its coldest zone (5) it benefits from original garden placement in an area protected from strong, freezing winds in winter. If already planted in a cold corridor, cover with mulch.
Maintenance & Pruning : If it starts to get woody and leggy, sheer back to last layer of healthy green and it will bulk up. In spring all old foliage can be trimmed off.
