Description
Plant spacing is based on the ultimate width of the plants. This figure is normally given as a range; for example, 3-5’. If you live in a cold climate and/or want plants to fill in more quickly, plan to space at the shorter end of the range. If you live in a warm climate, are on a limited budget, or are willing to wait longer for plants to touch, use the higher end of the range. Using the larger number is recommended when calculating distance from a building or structure. There’s really no such thing as "maximum spacing": if you don’t want your plants to touch, you can space them as far apart as you’d like. All plant spacing is calculated on center, or in other words, the centers of the plants are spaced one half of their eventual width apart:
Unless you are planting in a straight line, as you might for hedges or edging, space your plants in a staggered or zig-zag pattern for a more interesting and naturalistic look:

The plants arrived healthy and are growing well. I’m looking forward to buying more.
This is my 2nd time trying this hibiscus because I liked the color so much.
The 1st time was a fail because the root appeared to be dead when I received it (from another vendor).
This time I received a live plant that appears to be thriving.
Top was trimmed off, may have been the packaging. Plants were very well packaged otherwise. Plants doing very well, healthy, have buds on already. No complaints.
Hello! We do trim our plants from time to time. This helps the plant direct more energy into its root system so that it will better establish itself in your garden. Happy Gardening!
I bought the Philip Watson 2 piece Hardy live bare root hibiscus back in April. Followed the instructions to the tee, check them daily and they look the same as they did when I received them, DEAD! I watched the video and was told not to give up on them that they will start blooming any time! It's been two months and nothing!
Hello! Thank you for leaving us feedback. If you new Hibiscus is dead, we do offer a 60-day warranty. Please email pictures of your plant to claims@greatgardenplants.com, making sure to put your order number and name in the subject line so that we may provide the best assistance possible. If your plant is alive and not growing, remember that a lot is happening under the surface. When transplanting young plants from a nursery pot to a garden, the plant allocates more energy to root development instead of shoot development (above ground). It's important for them to develop a robust root system so they can actually absorb the nutrients and water in the soil around them. Then after their root system is more developed they'll invest in their shoots and flower development.
Happy Gardening!
I planted these in the fall of 2021 when they were on sale. All three of them are clearly dead. No sign of them this spring except little dried stumps. Obviously disappointed and won't buy again.
Hello, we apologize that you received plants not up to our standards! We do offer a 60-day guarantee on all of our plants. Unfortunately, your order is out of warranty since we are just learning about the dying plants. However, we would still like an opportunity to make this right. Please send an email with a photo of the plants to claims@greatgardenplants.com and we can see what we can do. Happy Gardening!
