Plant Spacing

Plant spacing is based on the ultimate width of the plants. This figure is normally given as a range; for example, 3-5’. If you live in a cold climate and/or want plants to fill in more quickly, plan to space at the shorter end of the range. If you live in a warm climate, are on a limited budget, or are willing to wait longer for plants to touch, use the higher end of the range. Using the larger number is recommended when calculating distance from a building or structure. There’s really no such thing as "maximum spacing": if you don’t want your plants to touch, you can space them as far apart as you’d like. All plant spacing is calculated on center, or in other words, the centers of the plants are spaced one half of their eventual width apart:

 How To Grow Soil: Gardenias need moist but well-drained soil; they don’t tolerate dry conditions, particularly when they are in bloom. They also prefer soil to be on the acidic side and benefit from a good layer of mulch to keep the roots cool.
Light: Full sun to part shade.
Water: Average moisture is preferred. Plants will do best if they get supplemental irrigation, particularly during hot, dry weather.
Spacing: 5 ft
Fertilizing: Apply a granular flowering shrub or rose fertilizer in early spring and again in late spring if desired.
Winterizing: For the best-looking foliage, plant gardenias out of the path of strong, drying winds. They benefit from a good 3″ layer of shredded bark mulch.
Maintenance & pruning: Little pruning is required; prune after the main bloom in late spring if desired. If you wish to grow gardenias indoors, they must be placed in very cool, very bright conditions, and should not be allowed to dry out. A sunroom, conservatory, or enclosed porch is far preferable to normal indoor conditions. Plants should be moved outdoors during warm weather for best results.

Good and bad!

Love the plants! DON'T like how they were packed! They're in a plastic bag. It's NOT necessary to put a wire clamp to attach the plastic to the pot!! I needed two needle nose pliers to get them apart!! And I'm very handy! They're NOT going to the moon! Use a twist tie! Ridiculous & unnecessary, and makes me not want to order any more plants. I shouldn't have to fight to get them free from the plastic bag! Other than that, the plants are fine. Now lets see how they grow!

Very excited!

I love gardenias! I have had trouble with some in the past so I was excited to try this one. I ordered 2 and they seem stronger and less fragile compared to other gardenias I’ve had, so I’m excited to see how they grow! The only down side is that they came very tiny so it will take a year or so to get bigger.
