Plant Spacing

Plant spacing is based on the ultimate width of the plants. This figure is normally given as a range; for example, 3-5’. If you live in a cold climate and/or want plants to fill in more quickly, plan to space at the shorter end of the range. If you live in a warm climate, are on a limited budget, or are willing to wait longer for plants to touch, use the higher end of the range. Using the larger number is recommended when calculating distance from a building or structure. There’s really no such thing as "maximum spacing": if you don’t want your plants to touch, you can space them as far apart as you’d like. All plant spacing is calculated on center, or in other words, the centers of the plants are spaced one half of their eventual width apart:

Description For a plant that can keep its cool - even in hot gardens, try planting 'Cool as Ice' blue fescue (Festuca). It may be a cool-season grass, but this cultivar handles the heat better than the rest, keeping its blue hues through the summer heat. Thin leaf blades with powdery blue hues add fine texture to the garden, especially as it sends up plumes of flowers in summer. Blue-green blooms age to a golden blonde through the season, continually adding interest after they fade. Since it has low water requirements and tolerant of poor soils, we recommend planting it in difficult sites, like rock gardens. How To Grow Soil: Happy in average soils. It is highly tolerant of urban pollution and will even thrive in inner-city environments.

Maintenance & pruning: "Rake out" with rake or fingers all spent foliage in early spring before it resumes active growth for the season. Division should be done in spring every few years to keep Festuca at its best.

Obsessed!

The two bigger ones are from last year’s order - which grew so much - and the smaller one is from Spring 2024 order this year (which by the way was a must more robust stock than last year). I can’t stop buying them. They do amazing in Oak Park, IL

Very small, not worth the price in my opinion

The blue fescue was small and sparse, to my surprise. I was expecting something larger based on the price. Customer service said, "We do note that all of our plants are young on each product page." So if you decide to order this, note the plant will be small.
