Plant Spacing

Plant spacing is based on the ultimate width of the plants. This figure is normally given as a range; for example, 3-5’. If you live in a cold climate and/or want plants to fill in more quickly, plan to space at the shorter end of the range. If you live in a warm climate, are on a limited budget, or are willing to wait longer for plants to touch, use the higher end of the range. Using the larger number is recommended when calculating distance from a building or structure. There’s really no such thing as "maximum spacing": if you don’t want your plants to touch, you can space them as far apart as you’d like. All plant spacing is calculated on center, or in other words, the centers of the plants are spaced one half of their eventual width apart:

Description Rudbeckia maxima (or giant coneflower, Dumbo ears, cabbage-leaf coneflower, swamp coneflower, and great coneflower) has many names for a good reason. It's called "giant coneflower" because it reaches epic proportions, growing 5-7 feet tall with massive flowers. It blooms above huge powdery blue basal foliage, which resembles Dumbo's ears or cabbage leaves. It's easy to grow in difficult sites, and while it prefers good drainage, it can handle wet soils, which is why it's lovingly called swamp coneflower. These features make it a pretty great perennial, so the name "great coneflower" comes naturally.

It's pollinator-friendly, attracting butterflies, bees, and hummingbirds in summer and birds in the fall as the flowers give way to seedheads. Maintenance & pruning: Deadhead to prolong bloom. Divide when clumps become overcrowded. Rudbeckias don't generally die out in the center and don't require frequent division.

getting bigger every day

When talking about "Giant" coneflowers you think "Giant" - but realistically, these are a perennial, remember the saying "Sleep, Creep & Leap" It takes a good three years for all perennials to get established. 1st year, sleep- they grow their root system, 2nd year, creep - a little bigger, 3rd year, leap... BUT I must say, for just getting established, they're a little larger every day - excellent, healthy plants, shipped well, and doing great! Can we fast forward to year three ;)

Has done very well for me.

I planted this last year in full sun in my Virginia 7a garden. I watered it well the day I planted it and have not watered it since. It's mulched but not on irrigation. I have done nothing to it. It does fine just with the amount of rain we get here and no other attention. The first year my Giant Coneflower just sort of sat there and looked at me. It came back this spring and is 6 or 7 feet tall with lots of flowers on it. I did have to stake it when it leaned over after a big wind storm, but it's doing fine. I'm hoping it will attract some goldfinches once the flower heads go to seed. I came to Great Garden plants to buy another one for another area of my landscape, but it's sold out. I hope they get it back in stock because this is a really cool plant!
