Description
Plant spacing is based on the ultimate width of the plants. This figure is normally given as a range; for example, 3-5’. If you live in a cold climate and/or want plants to fill in more quickly, plan to space at the shorter end of the range. If you live in a warm climate, are on a limited budget, or are willing to wait longer for plants to touch, use the higher end of the range. Using the larger number is recommended when calculating distance from a building or structure. There’s really no such thing as "maximum spacing": if you don’t want your plants to touch, you can space them as far apart as you’d like. All plant spacing is calculated on center, or in other words, the centers of the plants are spaced one half of their eventual width apart:
Unless you are planting in a straight line, as you might for hedges or edging, space your plants in a staggered or zig-zag pattern for a more interesting and naturalistic look:

After all the plants I’ve purchased from Great Garden Plants, it is time I finally wrote a review!
I live in a town that is wall-to-wall nurseries, 99% of which sell wholesale. The few that sell retail sell plants that you see everywhere- kind of a generic offering across the board. I purchase most of my perennials from GGP because if the size and quality of their plants. One pricey catalog supplier who is local and also sells retail has minuscule plants that may or not survive - and they’re 15 minutes away. I have replaced THEIR plants with GGP’s version of the same plant and got plants that were double in size.
The plants are packaged in pairs - or more if the plant is a smaller type of plant. Well-wrapped in plastic, boxed leaves-to-leaves in boxes that do NOT let the plants move, then places in a sturdy outer box. I have always received healthy plants with moist soil - some even in bloom! Fat and healthy the first year, they really take off the second year.
This is the 3rd year we’ve been in our new-construction house and our gardens look fantastic! And most of the plants were ordered here!
