Plant Spacing

Plant spacing is based on the ultimate width of the plants. This figure is normally given as a range; for example, 3-5’. If you live in a cold climate and/or want plants to fill in more quickly, plan to space at the shorter end of the range. If you live in a warm climate, are on a limited budget, or are willing to wait longer for plants to touch, use the higher end of the range. Using the larger number is recommended when calculating distance from a building or structure. There’s really no such thing as "maximum spacing": if you don’t want your plants to touch, you can space them as far apart as you’d like. All plant spacing is calculated on center, or in other words, the centers of the plants are spaced one half of their eventual width apart:

How To Grow Soil: Good drainage is a must, especially in shaded areas.
Light: Thrives in the shade and very colorful varieties will get better color in part sun. The color can wash out in full sun, and too much heat and light can cause the leaves to scorch.
Water: Keep the soil evenly moist, but not consistently wet to prevent root rot.

Good buy!

I bought these heuchera when this cultivar and a few others were on sale. I wanted to do a test order to see how someone ships a one quart perennial and what kind of plant would arrive. I ended up buying about a dozen plants as part of this experiment. At the sale price, these plants were less than half the cost they would have been at a nursery for the same sized plants.

All of my plants arrived at my home in Pennsylvania a day and a half after they left Great Garden Plants in Michigan. The packaging was beyond clever -- the plants were protected and the soil more or less stayed in the pots. The plants arrived pretty dry and I get that; to save shipping fees no one would ship water-logged plants. But they weren't so dry that the plants suffered. Each of the one quart heucheras was root bound and decently-sized.

I planted them immediately and watered them in. They were a bit shocked but that's to be expected. I've kept them watered and they seem to be settling in. Because they went into the ground at mid-summer I don't expect them to do very much this first year. The real proof will be next spring.

On the whole I am impressed with this service. Their prices are kind of steep -- too steep to use as a sole supplier. However, when things go on sale or for hard-to-find specimens I would buy from them again without hesitation.

In subsequent orders, I bought some grasses I couldn't find anywhere else and a male winterberry holly all of the nurseries in my area couldn't source for me in the middle of the summer. I've been impressed and happy with each purchase.

I am not a novice gardener nor am I a pro. I'm just a guy with an above average interest and skill in growing things and maintaining my landscapes and gardens. Give this service a shot.
