Plant Spacing

Plant spacing is based on the ultimate width of the plants. This figure is normally given as a range; for example, 3-5’. If you live in a cold climate and/or want plants to fill in more quickly, plan to space at the shorter end of the range. If you live in a warm climate, are on a limited budget, or are willing to wait longer for plants to touch, use the higher end of the range. Using the larger number is recommended when calculating distance from a building or structure. There’s really no such thing as "maximum spacing": if you don’t want your plants to touch, you can space them as far apart as you’d like. All plant spacing is calculated on center, or in other words, the centers of the plants are spaced one half of their eventual width apart:

Description Summerific Spinderella hibiscus (also known as perennial hibiscus or Hibiscus moscheutos) is one of the newest introductions from Proven Winners, and it is a dazzler. Summers sees it light up with dozens of gigantic two-toned blooms that create a pinwheel effect in the garden or landscape. Imagine being greeted every day in mid-late summer with these happy, showy flowers! Summerific hibiscus from Proven Winners are herbaceous perennials, so unlike their close cousin rose of Sharon, they die back to the ground in fall and begin each year fresh in spring. They are one of the latest perennials to emerge in spring, but watching them transform from tiny buds to big, healthy plants in a matter of weeks is nothing short of delightful.   How To Grow Soil: Plant in any sunny spot. Can tolerate wet soil once established; if grown in dry conditions, growth and blooming may be compromised.

Fertilizing: Fertilize in early spring, once the ground has thawed, with a granular rose fertilizer.
Winterizing: No special treatment is required; Stems can be cut off once the plant has gone dormant in late autumn as they do not add any considerable interest. 2-3" of mulch is recommended.
Maintenance: Little needed. Perennial hibiscus is one of the very last plants to emerge each spring. Be patient! Once they begin to show buds, they will start to grow quickly.

Spinderella Hibiscus

This is my 2nd time trying this hibiscus because I liked the color so much.
The 1st time was a fail because the root appeared to be dead when I received it (from another vendor).
This time I received a live plant that appears to be thriving.

Trimmed a little short but looks good.

Top was trimmed off, may have been the packaging. Plants were very well packaged otherwise. Plants doing very well, healthy, have buds on already. No complaints.

Bare root hibiscus dead

I bought the Philip Watson 2 piece Hardy live bare root hibiscus back in April. Followed the instructions to the tee, check them daily and they look the same as they did when I received them, DEAD! I watched the video and was told not to give up on them that they will start blooming any time! It's been two months and nothing!

Please email pictures of your plant to claims@greatgardenplants.com, making sure to put your order number and name in the subject line so that we may provide the best assistance possible. If you received your plants within that timeframe, we will be happy to apply your warranty once we receive the pictures.

If your plant is alive and not growing, remember that a lot is happening under the surface. When transplanting young plants from a nursery pot to a garden, the plant allocates more energy to root development instead of shoot development (above ground). It's important for them to develop a robust root system so they can actually absorb the nutrients and water in the soil around them. Then after their root system is more developed they'll invest in their shoots and flower development.

Totally Dead

I planted these in the fall of 2021 when they were on sale. All three of them are clearly dead. No sign of them this spring except little dried stumps. Obviously disappointed and won't buy again.
